Visitors to the installation move about in a completely dark space, guided only by a little monitor jut in fornt of them, showing their own position and how close they are to certain groups of data. Outside the action room is a projection screen on which the public can follow the sound events in visual form. Thus physical action in the real space and its simultaneous presence in the digitalized space release new potentials for perception.

'SMDK' is an interdisciplinary project that came about through an exchange of working methods between media artists, IT experts, computer musicians and natural scientists. An interactive data room was created on the packaged goods freighter Cap San Diego in Hamburg harbour. The room was connected to various public networks. Personal statements, voices, sounds and music were collected in an open data-base.
