The photo-sharing website Flickr, organized in November 2004 by the firm of Ludicorp in Vancouver, in a Beta-version as a free online web-service, was taken over by Yahoo! in March 2005. The popularity of Flickr established itself through a series of user friendly and innovative web applications, for example the user-generated tags (metadata), allowing users to mark the chosen images with catchwords/tags thus generating a collective cataloging (folksonomy). Also one can make images accessible to all or to only specific groups of users. The imagery can be directly transmitted per photo-cellphone or E-mail. Flickr’s HTML and HTTP-based programming operates with Open Source Software and is, in turn, especially adapted by web logins.
